THE FCA NASHVILLE STORY

FCA was founded in 1954 by eastern Oklahoma A& M basketball coach, Dan McClanen. Then next year, A. M. Downing, a Christian businessman from Nashville, read an FCA article in Reader's Digest and felt led to write a letter to the publication, thanking them for the article. McClanahan heard about the letter and the interest Nashville had, so he flew there to meet with Downing. Bill Wade, then L. A. Ram quarterback, and attorney Bob Taylor, former State Senator and Vanderbilt teammate of Bill Wade, to discuss getting FCA started in Tennessee. Nashville became the very first FCA Adult Chapter in America.

For the next decade and a half, an FCA Board of Christian businessman started the FCA ministry, focusing on high school athletes and coaches. Among these original board members included Charley Hawkins, Bob Mason, and William U. Smith. Hawkins was a teammate of Bill Wade’s at MBA and Vanderbilt, while Mason and Smith were very involved in the Nashville area as coaches and businessmen. Together, this original volunteer-board led the Nashville ministry until 1973, when the board hired Steve Robinson as the first full-time director.
